Interesting post on the AVSForum regarding using the VGA input and a solid black screen to "clear clouds."

It has been confirmed to NOT work, furthering our belief the defect is hardware-based.

" IT'S OFFICIAL! "PC input"MAKES NO DIFFERENCE whether you are watching through the PC input or any other inputs, THE CLOUDS ARE ALWAYS THERE, and will always be there....

I connected a PC via VGA to a 46" XBR2 AUGUST build(with slight clouding on left side). And I used a program called "DPT" http://www.dps.uk.com/freeware_DTP.htm
to test for dead or stuck pixels, it allows the screen to be completely black, with no windows borders showing on the outside. This program created the ideal Black screen to test for clouds.

People, make sure through a pc you have NO windows borders with START at the bottom of the screen, SCREEN must be completely BLACK. THIS is why the "DPT" program is useful.
In my tests, I had PICTURE turned up to max and Backlight to max... Clouds were clearly visible just like Cable thru HDMI and component!! The PC makes no difference!! The software Patch may also make no difference!! The panel is physically creating the clouds."

The people on the AVS Forum are a bunch of pansies and prima donnas. Especially the moderators, and especially "Mark Rubin". They can't stand anyone posting who doesn't agree with their viewpoint, they blatantly delete and edit (censor) posts, and suppress dissenting views.

I would not trust anything that comes from the AVS Forums because it is not an open forum where all people can comment. Further, the "expertise" there is a bit lacking... it seems like most people are 15 year old know-nothings. People actually think that "massaging" your LCD panel or laying it on it's face overnight will reduce backlight bleed! LOL!

I agree. There is no mura issue here... just idiot "I know better than you do" owners who find crap on the Internet and think they found a defect.

And yes - the AVS Forums are for losers, and Mark Rubin is a dick.

Thanks Sony rep. Perhaps you can explain the pictures of cloudy sonys all over the place? Or are people making this up because they want our TVs to suck?

Get over yourself.

Oh, you mean all the pictures of "torch mode" sets on a blank input with a six second camera exposure in a pitch black room?

There's no "mura". Just idiot owners who can't adjust a picture on an LCD properly. Get over YOURSELF, fanboy loser.

So I see clouds on my set and I am supposed to ignore them because some dude on the internet says I should? Thanks, but I'll sitck with beating Sony up over their shitty products.

Answer the question...if these things aren't visible, why are people taking picutres of them in the first place? Idiot.

L-O-S-E-R-S

someone posts pictures showing that the "problem" only shows up with a rediculous 8 second exposure and he gets hammered on for "not taking the pictures right".

THAT'S THE EXPLANATION? You have clouds, but you don't know it because you didn't take the picture right?

It is un-fricken-believable what people will do/say to make themselves feel better about buying a poor-mans-flat-screen and realizing after the fact that the blacks are not as 'black' as plasma.

You should have ponied up the $$ for a plasma instead of trying to get a big screen on a budget to impress your low-rent neighbors. Don't try to say it's broken because it doesn't look as good as a real dispay, homie.

p.s. Mark Rubin sucks.

Any problem that only shows up on 8 seconds exposure obviously is nonsense. That doesn't make the problem any less real for those who CAN see the clouds under normal conditions. All that matters is if clouds are visible or not to the user.

And obviously this isn't a problem endemic to LCDs since only the Sony and Samsung panels (jointly manufactured) exhibit the issue.

Personally I can't use a plasma anyways because they're too reflective for my room (too bright during the day).

Only Sony and Samsung have "torch-mode" backlights to get you to buy the TV when you are looking at it in the store.

1080p is 1080p. A different brand name of TV isn't going to have a better or worse picture. It's not like analog CRT or DLP or anything with electromechanical components. This is a TTL panel, with a known resolution and color depth.

What makes the Sony (and to a lesser extent, the Samsungs) look so good is the backlighting / brightness. But that is also something that people need to consider when adjusting their TV picture.

You can't have it both ways. If you want a bright TV -AND- deep blacks, go with plasma. If you don't have the budget for it, maybe you shouldn't be buying a flat panel TV?

Sony went with LCD over plasma because they could pimp out thier name brand to consumers who also buy crap like Bose. You fell for it. You got screwed. Suck up like a man and deal with it.

It's like people who buy a Hyundai "luxury car" and then complain that it doesn't drive/ride like a Lexus LS! "but it SHOULD perform like a $70K car for the $23K I paid for it!!!!!" WAAAAHHHHH.. Crybabies.

Piss off.

p.s. Mark Rubin is a dick.

You continue to avoid the issue. Many people have this problem and it has nothing to do with torch mode settings. Min backlight, less brightness, doesn't matter...clouds are there.

In fact, in many cases the only way to eliminate the clouds is to ratchet up the brightness to the point where the entire set looks grey, not black. Sony screwed up. And they're either going to have to fix it or refund the store via RMA. Either way, they lose, and I buy something else.

This is a defect with the panel, pure and simple. That's why it's on the Sonys and the Samsungs, which use the same panels (but different backlights).

We get that you are pathologically obsessed with plasma and Mark Rubin. Really we do. But no one cares.

Anonymous said...

I'm not avoiding anything. Just look at the evidence in the AVS Forum. The problem is that evidence that there is no defect with these things gets deleted by the rabid moderators and bitched about by the even more rabid anti-Sony idiots who insist on massaging their panels after taking grossly overexposed photos of them to "show the clouds". It's pathetic.

And as for Mark Rubin - he is a prick moderator who censors and deletes AVS Forum posts when people complain about participants who have a dissenting view or who present compelling evidence that this whole thing is bunk.

Lots of people care about whether free speech is actually promoted on a web forum or not, so eat my butt, Nazi-boy.

Congratulations, what shreds of credibility you might have had are gone. I don't really feel the need to argue with people whose idea of logic is sophomoric ad-hominem attacks, so I won't be returning to this page. You need to grow up.

Once again you show no sense of logic. If all these people reporting clouding were so anti-Sony, why did they spend thousands of dollars on Sony products? And how does your hard-on for Mr. Rubin change the fact that many sets have visible clouding?

A few people who insist on wildly over-exposing photos may in fact be out to show a problem that doesn't exist onsome sets. That doesn't mean the problem is non-existent. I have picture of my set with regular exposure that show the clouding I can see with my own eyes. Sony will have the opportunity to make things right and I hope they will. But the public should know that at least some large segment of these sets are flawed. The problem is too well-documented to be the work of a couple overeager conspiracy theorists.

I will post again if Sony fixes my clouded XBR3.

I don't need any credibility. Facts are facts, and the fact is that LCD panels all show backlight bleed, and that is the root of the problem that these new owners can't accept - they want plasma or CRT performance from an LCD panel. Not gonna happen. Just because I'm a jerk doesn't change that! And using big words doesn't make you smarter than me. If you knew who I was, you'd probably bos down in front of me, then run to the press hoping to make a buck by revealing my identity and getting your 15 minutes of fame.

Why did people spend so much money on Sony, especially XBR versions? Because they are label whores. No different than people who buy Bose or Coach or Tommy Hilfiger. They can't afford audiophile or videophile reference quality products, just like they can't afford Prada or Brioni. So, they do what they can. And the XBR line has always been Sony's "premier" and they want to be able to brag to their friends and neighbors. THAT is why they can't just accept the displays suck and return them for a refund. They HAVE to keep them because they can't live with the thought of enjoying watching video on something that isn't "premier".

I have never seen clouding on any display I have seen (and I have seen a lot of them). I have only seen it in overexposed photographs on the Internet. Further, people have started posting overexposed photos of laptop and other "traditional" LCD computer monitors and guess what? They show the same "clouding". There is no mura defect with these panels - only defective owners who are expecting to be able to run the display in torch mode in a pitch black room. Maybe these owners should learn what the proper black level for video is.

Sony won't fix your XBR3 because it's not broken. So, I will have the last word. LOL. Suck it.

p.s. Mark Rubin is a speech-censoring communist.

Who is this "Mark Rubin Sucks" poster? What a L-O-S-E-R!
You are obviously a person that can not think logically, cannot handle a difference of opinion, has to resort to bully tacktics when others disagree, and probably drives a huge oversized truck to compensate for what he lacks in manhood. Shut up, nobody needs your childish comments, GROW UP!

Look how mad I got the Nancy-Boy! LOL. Sorry you are angry that you spent 10% of your income on a TV with a crappy picture, but don't take it out on me. Vent your self-hate somewhere else.
